William Shatner for Governor General of Canada

4amdesign seems to be campaigning for William Shatner to become Canada's next Governor General, with these t-shirt designs.

You might have read or heard recently that there was a growing movement to get Shatner appointed to the position. There's even a Facebook page dedicated to the topic. I have no doubt that most of the supporters behind this idea are Star Trek fans, mainly the hard core ones known as Trekkies or Trekkers. Whatever the case, it's all in good fun.

Should Shatner ever choose to accept the position, he would become Canada's most famous Governor General since Frederick Arthur Stanley (Lord Stanley of Preston), as in Stanley Cup fame.

Never Fear. Video Man is Here!

This is a logo I designed for a contest for an online video company whose initials were MV. I didn't win the contest, nor the substantial cash prize that was awarded. However, I was reminded of the saying, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade."

I tinkered with different ideas of how I could make use of the MV logo. As always, whenever I have a logo lying around doing nothing, I like to throw it on a t-shirt for sale to make a little extra cash. I brainstormed words that began with those initials but I never really came up with anything I liked. It then dawned on me that the letters in the logo were interchangeable and that the V could just as easily lead off the name.

When I originally thought up the concept for the contest, I wanted to incorporate the initials to look like three video control buttons you might see for an online video player. Obviously, these buttons' functions are purposely vague. Their real function is to morph into the MV letters. Long after losing the contest, I realized it could be VM.

Sticking with the video theme, I came up with the name Video Man. Immediately, an image of a superhero sprang to mind.

Narrator voice: "Able to view movie marathons in one sitting. Stronger than the toughest movie critic. It's video Man!"

I thought maybe his secret identity could be a video store clerk. Heck, Video Man could even be the name of the video store itself. He could then be the official mascot of the company.

Wordans V3 : New and Improved

Yesterday, Wordans, a print-on-demand company, launched version 3 of their website with an updated layout and many improvements to their features. An example of one of the improvements is their claim that the T-Shirt Designer is now faster and easier to use. I'll let you be the judge of that.

They also claim that they have a new shop system with changes that shop owners have been waiting for. I rarely use my shop at Wordans so I wouldn't know what would have changed. Can any veteran Wordans users out there tell me if you like the new changes or not? What is new with the shop features? Is the Designer really faster and easier to use? Blog Renovations

Please excuse the mess. I am currently renovating this blog and trying out new layouts, backgrounds and colour schemes. For a while, I've been thinking of converting the layout of this blog from two columns to three. I think I'll be able to organize things better and have a cleaner look and easier navigation. Because of this, you will notice in some of the posts that certain widgets that were originally created for a wider configuration, now overlap into the right hand sidebar. Please bare with me as I intend on rectifying that whenever I get a chance.

Over the last few years, I've been using this blog as my main source for outside advertising of my POD stores and design services. In absence of a proper website, it served me well for what it was worth.

However, it is time for a change and a step in a new direction. I would like to introduce my new website, which from now on will be my main site. The site name is still the same, just the address has changed.

Wordans Website Re-Design

Speaking of website re-design (see previous post), Wordans.com has gone through its own renovations and unveiled a new look. It's much more easier to navigate and has a clean and organized look. They've also introduced a new affiliate program. In addition, store owners or boutiques as they call them, have much more flexibility in customizing the appearance of their online shops.

As is the case with T-Shirt Monster, Wordans is a Canadian website. It is based in Montreal.

I actually opened a store at Wordans quite a few months ago but I haven't really done anything with it. Something that prevents me from doing more with the site is the fact that Wordans requires exclusivity when you post your designs to its site. In other words, if you upload any of your original designs on Wordans, you cannot have those designs posted simultaneously at another online t-shirt site. That kind of turns me off to the site.

However, if you are just looking to do some shopping of their large marketplace, feel free to click on the banners to check out the enormous selection of t-shirt designs.

T-Shirt Monster Website Getting Makeover

One of the websites I use to sell print-on-demand apparel is in the planning stages of a site re-design and is asking visitors for feedback. In case you couldn't tell by the mini banner above, the website is T-Shirt Monster.

T-Shirt Monster is still relatively new to the POD world, so it has a ways to go before catching up to the big boys. That's why they are asking for your suggestions on how they can improve the site. If you have some great ideas that you would like to see them implement, just e-mail your suggestion(s) at info@tshirtmonster.ca
For example, you might have an idea on how to improve their product Design Lab.

Being a Canadian website, I like that T-Shirt Monster is a great alternative for my Canadian customers even though it could use several improvements. However, if enough of you write in with your great ideas, I'm sure TSM will make several of those in the coming months when they finally re-launch their site. And you can all say, "Hey! They used my idea!"

Tanya is self taught and works mainly in oil pastels. She also creates one-of-a-kind jewelry. Her style of painting is very lush and vibrant, using rich colours and an eye for detail. There are also a lot of whimsical qualities to her work that make it stand out from the crowd.

UHB Fantasy League @ Blogger

Due to the positive response I received to the United Hockey Blades (UHB) fantasy league I set up at Yahoo! Fantasy Sports, I decided to expand on the idea. I am writing to announce the birth of UHB2, a spin off of the original UHB. There are a couple of differences with this new league. One is that the service provider I am using for UHB2 is Fantrax.com. The other is that the league is set up with a rotisserie scoring format. With the Yahoo pool having a head-to-head format, a lot of roto lovers were left out of the club. We here at the UHB share the philosophy of the more, the merrier!

If I can't get 16 then it will still run with as many teams as I can get. I would prefer at least 10. After several years as an active participant of various fantasy hockey leagues, I've decided to try on the commissioner's hat and create my very own league. If this year's pool goes well, I plan to make it an annual event. It will be open to all but I would prefer serious managers. Nothing drags down a league more than a couple of GMs who decide to abandon their teams in the middle of the season because they are not performing well.

A couple of cool things about the UHB. One is it is completely free to join. That means no entry fee is required. The other is there is an actual trophy that will be delivered to the address of the league champion to keep forever.

Both offer enormous opportunities to live the dream of a peaceful life and the means to realize your full potential. Add to that the ability to exercise your right to free speech. Others who are fortunate enough to come back alive are often war amputees, suffer from depression, post traumatic stress or physical ailments. It is rare the soldier who comes home from a war unafflicted in one way or another.

What can you do, you ask? You can thank a soldier. It may not seem like much but knowing that their efforts are appreciated can boost the morale and spirits of soldiers, past and present. How can you thank a soldier? Dave Murphy has come up with a simple yet effective way. Words need not even be spoken, although that would be great also.

Murphy, born in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Canada, has created a website called Thank A Soldier and along with that has opened up an online store where you can purchase Thank A Soldier T-Shirts. The t-shirts are available in several different colours, styles and sizes. In addition, there are different themes that can be customized by the customer by adding the name of a loved one or fallen comrade. Murphy's motives are noble and his inspiring story of what led him down this path is certainly an interesting one. Spreadshirt Store Renovations

I opened up a store at Spreadshirt a couple of years ago just to try it out. There were some things I really liked about it, others, not. I decided I would put it on the back burner and focus my attentions on the other 2 PODs I had at the time. Since then, I decided I would be closing my Cafepress store and wanted to find a good replacement. I logged in to my Spreadshirt shop and noticed it was the first time in 388 days! Wow, I didn't think it was that long ago.

I had to re-acquaint myself with the navigation system and get my bearings. Some of the site is cumbersome to get around. Once I did, I viewed my shop layout. It was a horrendous mess. The colour scheme, background image and available products all left something to be desired. It was time for an overhaul.

I spent about three days fixing it up and I am somewhat satisfied with the new look. I still have to tinker with some things but it will suffice for now.

One of the things I love about Spreadshirt is the ability to upload vector designs to be printed as flex or flock prints. Flex is a type of vinyl material that is cut out and pressed onto your t-shirt or other product. Flock is a fuzzy material that is applied to you shirt the same way. These print styles last much longer than DTG and won't fade.

The t-shirt you see at the top of this post is a combination of flex and flock. The BLADES hockey skate logo you see on the front is a flex print. It will have a shiny appearance. On the back are areas for customers to insert their own name and uniform number in flock, which has a fuzzy, almost felt-like feel. This design and others at My Shop can be customized further upon request, as in the logo colours can be changed.. Just leave me a comment if you want a design that is currently not featured on a style of shirt that you would like.

I've been doing a lot of house cleaning over at my T-Shirt Monster lens. I had a look at it recently and decided it needed some major renovations and updates. It even has a spiffy new, green colour scheme!

The spruced up lens focuses more on my gallery instead of T-Shirt Monster in general. You still get the general idea of how the website works but using more examples of my work to illustrate it.

I've tidied it up some but I still want to work on it more and get a better flow to it.

I added an Affiliate Add space which is currently featuring Life Is Crap. I might consider other galleries in the future but for now, that Crap is good enough. If you have a gallery, let me know what you think.

Creating Custom Baseball Cards Now Easier Than Ever!

Ever since I created my first custom baseball card available for sale, I have been searching for ways to improve on the product both visually and practicality-wise. While my original effort was a great experience, through customer feedback I was able to learn what areas to improve and how to make the whole customization process more efficient, user-friendly and yes, even fun!

I guess you could say I was trying to build a bionic baseball card much the same way Oscar Goldman built Colonel Steve Austin into The Six Million Dollar Man. Let me assure you however that the baseball card is much more affordable than $6 000 000.

The end result is the card you see below (front) and also above (back). I rebuilt it better...faster...stronger. I have the technology. Can you hear the bionic sound effects? No? OK, it's just me.

The card is virtually 100% customizable by the user. About the only thing a customer can't edit (as in change color) is the 3D silver frame you see on the front of the card. The workaround to this problem is I have created a variety of stylish mattes that will be available on separate cards.

How do I change the background colors on the front and back?

Located to the right of the product image on the product page is a button labeled Customize it, situated directly below the orange Add to cart button. Click on that button and the page will reload with options to customize.

Look near the top right and you will see a menu bar with the following drop-down choices:

Select Edit Align Colors <--click this choice

Click on Colors and then on Background. A color menu will pop up. Select the desired color by clicking on it. You can also have a wider selection by entering in a hex # in the white box and clicking enter. You can find more colors and their corresponding hex numbers here. You must repeat these steps to change the color on the back also. Just click on back view to do this.

-note: Even though the background color on the back is tri-toned, you need only pick one color and all three colors will change simultaneously to various shades.

Just follow the red words above and you will have no problem.

2. I want pitcher's statistics instead. Can I change the stats categories?

Yes, you can also do this by clicking on Customize it. Then locate the appropriate text field you want to edit, click on Change text and type in what you would like instead and then click on OK. Repeat this procedure for any other text you want to change.

I am planning on making a version specifically with pitcher's stats in the near future to make it quicker for the customer.

So there you have it. Better than the original. Like an improved cyborg much like Terminator 2 was better than the original movie. A cybernetic baseball card. Wicked!

In addition to all the practical new features, it really is fun creating even if you are just doing it to pass time because you're bored. Try out a combination of different background colors and see what crazy color schemes you can conjure up!

He has always reminded me of lawyer Nathan Thurm. In this skit, just substitute Bettman for Thurm and Ron Maclean for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and you have your typical HNIC interview between those two. It's uncanny how Thurm accuses his interviewer of always interrupting him, just like Bettman does. Spooky even. Take a look at at these other Nathan Thurm interviews, h ere and here then tell me you don't see the connection. Answer me this. Have you ever seen Gary Bettman and Nathan Thurm in the same room?

The more kids or adults you know who have a set of their own, the more you can trade and build a unique 100 card set with no doubles (don't forget to keep one of your own for yourself). Bring them to a trade meet and see what cards you can swap with other collectors.

Biodegradable Plastic Bags

"Paper or Plastic?" That is something we had all grown accustomed to hearing from the bag boy for several years when ringing up our groceries at the checkout counter. Nowadays, you are not likely to hear either as society gravitates toward more eco-friendly alternatives.That alternative at the moment seems to be cloth bags.

The reason for the change is because paper, although recyclable, uses up valuable energy to produce for something that gets discarded most likely after a single use. The production process of paper bags also causes considerable air pollution.We decided that we have better uses for our dwindling tree population.

The replacement for the paper bag, was the versatile plastic bag. I say versatile because, if you were like me, after carrying your groceries from your car and storing the food, you used them as garbage bags. The problem is, these bags are not recyclable, use too much energy to produce and take an eternity to break down in landfills. Once a landfill gets full, a new landfill site is needed and the process starts all over again. The problem with that is they are not making any more real estate, folks. What we have is all we get and it gets a little more crowded on this big, blue marble as the world's population continually increases. Therefor, a replacement bag was sought.

The cloth or canvas bag was introduced as the ideal solution. Reusable and durable, the only drawback seems to be remembering to take them with you on your next shopping trip. But can we eliminate the plastic bag completely?

Where cloth is not ideal to use is when packages are sent through the mail. Most courriers use corrugated boxes or plastic wrapping which takes us right back to the original dilemma. However, some companies have introduced biodegradable plastic packaging to ship out their orders. Skreened is one such company.

New Buffalo Wings T-Shirt

I've created some new Buffalo Wings merchandise over at Skreened.

This t-shirt is an update of a design I've uploaded on some of my other PODs. I went with a solid black simply because Skreened doesn't offer black t-shirts so a black design looks very good on all the colours.

I like how the large print area allows for some artistic freedom and gives a fresh look to an old design. It is like thinking outside the box or colouring outside the traditional boundaries that can become like a pigeon hole at other sites. It is a refreshing way to work. I am currently going over some of my older designs and seeing which ones I want to put a new spin on. I will be having fun experimenting with these new canvases they call t-shirts.

I've also added the design to this handy, all-purpose tote bag.
I've reversed the colours on each side of the bag where the buffalo is red and the text is black and the other side is just the opposite. It gives it a unique look I find, as you can alternate which side faces away from you and give others the impression you have a new bag. Also, I find the red buffalo gives a nice spicy look to it.

Unlike the t-shirt above, the bag only comes in the natural colour you see here.

A lot of people enjoy Buffalo wings but most people have never actually seen a buffalo with wings. Now you can show them!

Trees are vital for producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as moderating ground temperatures. They are also important elements in landscaping and agriculture, both for their aesthetic appeal and their orchard crops (such as apples)

In 1987, a 30 minute animated short was created, called, The Man Who Planted Trees. It was based on the 1953 tale, L'Homme qui plantait des arbres by the French author, Jean Giono. I had the pleasure of seeing it not long after it was released. It is a beautifully animated account of a shepherd who dedicated nearly half of his life to single-handedly planting trees, one by one, to re-forest a desolate valley.

The film has a calm and soothing voice of the narrator recounting his tale of meeting the shepherd while on a hiking trip. The story spans several decades and is an inspiring tale of one man's selfless dedication.

Distributed in an English and French version by Radio-Canada, it won the Academy Award for best animated short film. In 1994, it was voted as one of the 50 greatest cartoons of all time (#44). It is also at the top of IMDB's list of short films.

If you have never been fortunate enough to have viewed this awesome film, now is your chance. Do yourself a huge service and set aside 30 minutes of your time to view this masterpiece. I assure you, you will not regret it. Here is the English version in its entirety. Enjoy.

Personalized Football and Soccer Cards

Previously, I have posted about the customizable baseball cards I and a few other designers have made available for sale. These cards allow you to upload an image of your child (or yourself) and type in your name and various statistics and info into the appropriate text fields. The whole process only takes a couple of minutes and then you are ready to order. It's a pretty cool way to make your child's day. Imagine the fun they can have trading cards with other friends who have done the same thing!

Eventually, my plan is to branch out into some of the other sports and create custom cards for those. I have not gotten around to that yet but someone who did is the designer beezkneez's . Have a look at the football and soccer cards that BK has designed. Like the baseball cards, they are customizable so that you can add all your own personal info along with your own photo.

Build Robby the Robot in 3D with Bryce

If you don't know who or what Robby the Robot is, he was the robot helper first featured on screens in the 1956 sci-fi movie, Forbidden Planet. The movie is also notable for starring Leslie Nielsen in one of his rare, early dramatic performances. Nielsen portrayed the Commander of the spaceship, Cruiser C-57D and later encounters Robby, along with his crew, on one of his missions to the planet Altair.

The movie is widely regarded in sci-fi circles and has become a cult hit over the years. It stands out above the rest of the run-of-the-mill 1950's sci-fi movies because of a great story (it's based loosely on Shakespeare's The Tempest), a great cast (Walter Pidgeon and Anne Francis also star) and great special effects for the era, created by Disney.

If you have never seen Forbidden Planet before and would like to, you can see the entire movie uninterrupted for free at Flash-Candy.com in high quality. You don't have to download anything and you rarely have to wait for it to buffer. Along with Forbidden Planet there are dozens of other classic horror and sci-fi movies, all suitable for kids' viewing eyes.

Great news! According to this interview, T-Shirt Monster will be rolling out new products this year. Among the new items buyers and sellers will be able to place their deigns on are mugs, coasters, mousepads, aprons and shopping bags. It also mentions that greeting cards and calendars will be available in the near future. This is fantastic and a wonderful opportunity for Canadian shoppers as well as sellers marketing to a Canadian market. It is really exciting to watch this small company grow with each passing month. Now with it's first anniversary coming up, let me be one of the first to congratulate them. Happy anniversary T-Shirt Monster. Here's hoping for many more productive years and a successful partnership.

It's odd that the article does not mention who the person is that is being interviewed. Based on the answers given to the questions, it's safe to assume it is the founder of T-shirt Monster and not the little Monster himself. It would have been nice to mention the interviewee's name if only for the purpose to give the article more credibility. In any case, I think it's safe to assume whoever it is, he knows what he's talking about.

Sign of Happiness is a cheerful, whimsical pun, designed to bring a smile to the faces of the people you encounter. You've no doubt heard the saying, "smiling is a sign of happiness". Well, I decided to interpret that in a literal sense with this effort and give it a whole new perspective and hopefully in turn make other people smile.

The second entry is another play on a famous quote by René Descartes who said, "Je pense, donc je suis" (I think, therefore I am). Substituting think for instant message, I also took the liberty of abbreviating "I am" to IM which is short for instant message. To complete the design, I added a smiley emoticon which is commonly used when instant messaging friends. Hope you like it.

Cool Mozilla Firefox T-Shirts

Here is a very simplistic one, yet at the same time very clever. I really love this one. I am a big fan of classic, bold logos and emblems. This one really flows together nicely with the fox's ears as the letter M for Mozilla and the mirrored letters F for Firefox to complete the fox's head, giving it the appearance of eyes and a nose. Actually that other F might actually be the number 3 for which version of Firefox this is. Now that I look at it more, that has to be it. Awesome!

Ordering T-Shirts: Then and Now

In this video, you will see how ordering a custom t-shirt used to be done. You'll see a frustrated customer who is trying to get the t-shirt store owner to give him the proper t-shirt he ordered. Confusion, delays and shoddy service only add fuel to the fire as the customer grows more irate, not to mention that he probably took time out of his busy schedule to make the commute to the store. Observe.

Notice how the customer ends up having gone there for nothing because his t-shirt won't be ready 'til "Thursday"? That's enough to make any talking, green piece of felt's blood boil. It's not easy being green when you're seeing red, huh Kermit?

The Who Apparel: Accept No Substitute

The video above features the original members of the rock band, The Who, including the late, great, Keith Moon, the drummer. Moon died in 1978 and although The Who soldiered on with substitute drummers and continued to record and tour, many believe that the group was never the same. Ask those same people and they'll tell you that Moon was the greatest rock music drummer ever.

Sadly, he is gone and we cannot change that, however he is not forgotten. Now with this official The Who apparel and merchandise, we can reunite the four lads together again, including the more recently deceased bassist, John Entwistle. Casper, The Friendly Ghost

The movie trailer above is what a lot of younger viewers remember as their first glimpse of a friendly little ghost named Casper whom befriends a girl named Wendy (Cristina Ricci). However, an older generation remembers Casper's origins as a theatrical animated character and later as a television cartoon series character. I am a little late in hopping on the bandwagon for announcing that Zazzle has introduced brand new skateboards but like they say, better late than never.

Zazzle custom skateboards allow you to design your very own skateboard using a patent-pending printing process on North American Maple Decks, printed in California. You can create a skateboard to purchase yourself or you can sell your design online. The boards come in three styles, Comp, Mini and Old School and also come in various sizes. There are no minimum orders or setup fees and the skateboards ship within 24 hours after ordering.

To help launch the companies new product, Zazzle.com's co-founders and brothers, Jeff and Bobby Beaver, volunteered as guinea pigs for a publicity stunt that had them getting a couple of rad sk8tr boi lids. If you're not hip to what I'm saying, that means they got new haircuts. Have a look.

Could it be that when Avril Lavigne was singing Sk8tr Boi, she had either Jeff or Bobby in mind? Just imagine one of their faces in place of hubby's face, Deryck Whibley of Sum 41. I just can't imagine Jeff and Bobby changing the name to The Zazzle, as in this example.

The Story of Skater Boy

It's not only skateboards you can design at Zazzle but t-shirts too and they can serve the same purpose. Just design a great looking t-shirt and have a buddy wear it and then you can turn him into a human skateboard. Take him for a ride on a half pipe or grind some rails with him as in these next videos. I would have liked to have seen Jeff and Bobby try this.

Anyway, I haven't yet dipped my toes into the skateboard pool as far as designing my own yet but I will as soon as I can come up with a design I like. 40th Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest

In Canada, during the month of October, there are three major holidays/events of which to look forward. One is Halloween, which is primarily a holiday for kids, although adult costume parties are common. Another of course is the Canadian Thanksgiving Day, a family holiday, celebrated on the second Monday in October, to give thanks to the bountiful harvest and all the things in general we have at the end of the harvest season. Finally, the third is a nine day festival celebrated in the twin cities of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontari0, called Oktoberfest. It is modeled after the original German Oktoberfest and outside of Germany, is the second largest Oktoberfest celebration in the world. Kitchener was formerly named Berlin and has a large population of citizens with German ancestry. Because it is mainly a beer-based festival, this is geared more towards drinking-aged adults, which is 19 in Canada. The Kitchener-Waterloo event even overlaps Thanksgiving Day and celebrates by having a large parade that is nationally broadcast on television. This year marks the 40th Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest celebration, Canada's Greatest Bavarian Festival, and runs from Oct 10-18.

Miss Oktoberfest

One of the annual events at the K-W Oktoberfest is the selection of Miss Oktoberfest. This was formerly a televised beauty pageant but now focuses on a female applicant's community involvement and personal character. However if you are a male and an equal opportunist, you might try impressing (fooling) the judges with these character "attributes" . If the pageant is not your cup of tea (or stein of beer in this case), and your lederhosen or dirndl is at the cleaners, you can try this t-shirt on for size to fit in at the festival.

Another thing that female(and male) festival goers like to do when they attend is ride the sausage. It's not as as sexual as it sounds. Then again, have a look for yourself, maybe it is on second thought.

Walter Ostanek - Polka King

Known as Canada's Polka King, Walter Ostanek has won 3 Grammy awards and been nominated 13 times. Here he is playing at the K-W Oktoberfest.

Of course, the biggest part of Oktoberfest is the beer and to get in the spirit of the festival, you don't just drink the beer out of a plain ol' glass or mug but out of a fancy beer stein.

There are all kinds of Oktoberfest related apparel and merchandise that you can purchase and customize to complete the ultimate experience.

Halloween T-Shirt Contest

T-Shirt Monster's monthly themed t-shirt design contest for October is Halloween. I think we pretty much all saw that one coming. However, I am not complaining as I love Halloween and anything related to it. So when the theme was announced, I decided to go back in my archives and update a design I did a couple years ago for one of my other POD shops.

I call it, "Zombies Ate My Brain...and my Candy Corn". I added that little bit of humor at the end because I can't think of who else would eat candy corn other than zombies. There are some actual living, breathing humans that enjoy the Halloween candy resembling corn but I argue that it is the candy corn that probably turns people into zombies to begin with. At the very least it turns them into sugar zombies.

Anyway, here is my entry for the contest. If you would like to vote for it, just click on the image and you'll see where and how to cast your vote.

I tried to make it reminiscent of those old horror movies of the 50's and 60's with the wacky movie titles. By the way, if you think I'm alone in my feelings for candy corn, have a look at this.

New and Improved! Make Your Own Baseball Card

Sometime last year, I designed a DIY baseball card available for purchase in my Zazzle gallery. The card was customizable, allowing the user to insert their own photo and text for name, bio, trivia, statistics, etc. This was done when the customer clicked on "Customize", and then editing each individual module in the design. Originally I had wanted to create the card as a template design, with an easy-to-use photo and text field editor tool but there were technichal difficulties (bugs) which prevented me from doing so. As a result the baseball card was still usable but not as efficient and user-friendly as I had intended. Well I am happy to say, that is no longer the case.

What prompted me to re-visit the DIY baseball card idea was an e-mail from a potential customer who was having difficulty with the text alignment. This is the very reason why I left instructions in the product description for anyone to contact me if they had trouble customizing their card. I was more than happy to help out.

In this case, the customer asked if I had any tips on how to go about lining up the text properly. I quickly offered a work-around solution that seemed to satisfy the needs of the customer. However, the customer also wanted to know if there was a way to customize the colour of the card front and back. Unfortunately no, not by the customer but I said I would be more than happy to create another card with any colour scheme of choice. The customer informed me that the baseball card was to be a present for his father's 70th birthday and that he wanted the card's colours to be the same as the 1959 Washington Senators baseball team's uniforms. He provided me a link for the uniform's appearance and I started working on it.

It was at this stage that I decided to again try creating the card as a template. To my delight, the bugs seemed to have been eradicated (Zazzle must have used Raid) and the template fields were put in place and saved in the final design. Now the customer simply needs to edit the text fields that they see next to the baseball card to the right. If you wish, further customization is also available by clicking on "customize".

This priceless feedback from the customer was a great experience and inspired me to update the product's description to include a brief tutorial of tips and tricks on how to successfully design your own baseball card. I have also indicated that if you would like a different colour scheme for the front and back, to please contact me and I would be more than happy to offer any colour you want. I would also design a card for other sports as well including football, basketball, hockey and soccer. All you have to do is ask.

Zombies Ate My Homework

This is my first entry for the "Back to School" t-shirt contest at T-shirt Monster.

Don't you hate it when you do a homework assignment for school and the night before you are due to turn it in, Zombies rise from the dead and eat it? If that isn't bad enough, they also eat your brain! I guess they need their fibre AND their protein. A lot of good this does you for an excuse for your teacher. However, if you were to wear this shirt the very next day, the teacher would have no choice but to believe you, wouldn't he/she? Surely you wouldn't go to all that trouble if it weren't true, would you? Well if you would, this shirt is perfect for you. Wear it on the days you haven't completed your homework assignments, which, hopefully isn't too often.

How to design your own t-shirts

If you've been reading this blog the last few weeks, you know that T-Shirt Monster is a new Canadian, online POD service provider, allowing you to design, buy and sell your own t-shirts.

The screenshot to the right is the Design Lab at T-Shirt Monster, where you can experiment with your ideas like a mad scientist with all the beakers and bunson burners in the world at his/her disposal.

If you are new to this type of online service, I have put together a bare bones tutorial just to get you started in the right direction.

The first thing you would do is click on Create Custom T-Shirts! Once there , you would follow these four basic steps to add text and clip art.

Click on "Add Your Design"
Click on "New Text". In the "Add Text" box that pops up, type in the text you want and then click on the check mark. You'll then be able to choose the size, colour and type of font you would like.
Click on "New Clip Art". In the "Add Clip Art" window that pops up, click on the "choose a category" drop menu to select the clip art image you would like. When you have chosen one, click on it and it will be automatically added to your t-shirt. Note that you can add as many clip art images to one t-shirt as you want. You can then move, rotate or resize the image if you wish.
If you are serious about you design and not just experimenting and are planning to buy or sell your t-shirt, then you must register first, then you can click on "Exhibit". There, you would title your shirt, give it a description, add tags, choose a category and set the markup price. That's it, you're all done.

Although my gallery at T-Shirt Monster has been open for several weeks now and I have posted about it here before, I consider this the grand opening, with all the hoopla and fanfare associated with such an event. That is because T-Shirt Monster just unveiled their affiliate program and provided its members with all sorts of goodies as far as banners and links are concerned.

One of the great features the Monster unveiled is this nifty new flash panel, which doesn't only showcase a few of my designs but every single one in my gallery.

My Monster Gallery Designs

If you want to showoff only a single design, T-Shirt Monster has that base covered too. Recently, I entered one of the site's monthly-themed contests for the first time. The theme for this one was Summer Lovin'. The winner received $500 in cash and prizes ($250 cash and a $250 gift certificate for T-Shirt Monster).

Although I didn't win, it was a lot of fun and I did get a great new design out of it, which I can continue to display and sell in my gallery.

Maybe you have an idea of your own that you would like to put on a t-shirt but you lack some of the finer skills in t-shirt design. Once again, T-shirt Monster can help you out with what they call their Design Lab. Here you can create your own custom shirt by using the lab tools which include a multi-font text creator and a large selection of clip art from which to choose.

Here is another entry of mine for the t-shirt contest by T-Shirt Monster. The theme is Summer Lovin' and I thought what could represent summer better than some nice, cool, refreshing watermelon. The foliage on the vines is shaped like hearts, showing how much it loves the summer season. The contest closes at the end of the month, so if you are bored, consider voting for my design.

Re-branding Caza Creations

If you have visited here before, you may notice that Caza Creations has a new logo and banner as well. Actually, the logo is a cleaned-up and modified version of the previous logo, with a much bolder look that better represents what Caza Creations is about.

The wordmark Caza Creations is now at the forefront of the design with the familiar "double c" in the background. The coulours have changed a little bit, starting with the logotype which has a hard-edged, horizontal gradient of two shades of blue. It has a thick navy blue outline whereas the old logotype had a thin white outline. Also, the logotype no longer uses the "double C" logo as the first letters of each word, instead standing out on its own.

As mentioned, the C within a C logo is placed behind the logotype forming an instantly recognizable background and completing the overall logo's appearance. This also has an even thicker, navy blue outline and the fill is a green and blue, radial gradient.

The banner itself remains a work in progress but for now I think this one is a considerable improvement over the former one. Even though the old banner had a cool appearance, I feel it conveys a better message of what Caza Creations provides. However, I am not 100% satisfied with it and will be tweaking it again once I know what direction I want to go.

I also have a simple black and white version of the logo for advertising purposes.

What effect will this have on Caza Creations stores? Well, currently I am in the process of re-branding each store that you see situated directly underneath the banner of this blog. The goal is to try to give a uniform look to each store as much as possible, starting with the logo and banner. I haven't gotten a chance to update them all yet as I still have the old banners up for Cafepress, Spreadshirt and Squidoo. Eventually I will get around to changing those to the new banner. Hopefully, this will create a more recognizable brand identity, one that customers will come to know and remember.
